== 정의 ==
인지과학의 근본적인 개념은 인지주의에 있다. 곧 인지과학은 마음과 두뇌와 컴퓨터의 본질과 상호관계를 규명하고 인간을 설명하려는 과학적 접근이다. 인지적 패러다임은 인간에 대해 프로이트의 '억압된 무의식'으로도, 스키너의 행동주의로도 설명하려 하지 않는다. 인간을 비롯한 동물이 어떻게 인지를 하고 이를 활용하는지, 그리고 이것이 컴퓨터와 어떤 연관성이 있는지에 대해 설명하고자 하는 것이다.

인지과학이라는 명칭은 1973년 C. Longuet-Higgins에 의해 처음 사용되었다 한다. 인지과학이 광범위한 범위를 포괄하고 있기에 학자마다 정의하는 바가 제각기 다르다.

인지과학의 초기에서 사용된 인지의 개념은 형식주의의 영향을 받아 정형적 명제로 진술할 수 있는 앎을 지칭하는 것이었다. 예를 들어, 최초의 인공지능 프로그램에 사용된 표현 언어는 러셀과 같은 논리주의 철학자들의 것과 매우 유사했다. 그러나 현대에는 인지과학을 인간의 두뇌와 마음, 그리고 이에 대한 모형화에 대해 다루며, 컴퓨터와 넷 간 정보적 관계를 분석하는 학문으로 정의한다.
